Practicing Harmlessness

7/1/1999

Practicing Harmlessness

Let us itemize the qualities of the disciple we have presented so far:

(1) Soul contact

(2) Holding the mind steady in the light

(3) Detachment when necessary.

(4) The ability to either send or receive

(5) Reflection – contemplation

(6) Talent.

(7) The power to initiate

(8) The ability to create and sense a point of tension.

(9) Willingness to sacrifice

(10) Discernment

(11) Perseverance

(12) Inclusiveness

(13) Harmlessness

(14) Sensitivity

I believe we left off on harmlessness which needs to be summarized. This is an interesting one to bring up at this time as it seems to some that we have had harmfulness bouncing back and forth in this group.

We need to look at the basic guiding key here which was given by Dave:

“The key to following the harmless path is having the ability to discern whether or not a particular act/invention/teaching will benefit more people in the long run than it harms.”

Now let us look at our current situation in relation to this. We had a potential conflict point arise. Were we correct in responding to it or should we pretend that disharmony does not exist and ignore it, hoping it will go away?

What we have to do is follow Dave’s advice here. We must do our best to peer into the future and see the results of our decisions and then follow the path least harmful.

Many are deceived into thinking that the avoidance of conflict is the least harmful path, but this is often not the case. This avoidance of conflict in individual lives often causes a suppression of emotion and such suppression often results in depletion of energy and life-threatening disease. Sometimes such suppression will result in eventual emotional explosion where the guy walks into a MacDonald’s and shoots everyone in sight.

The people who knew him will say something like: “I can’t believe he did that. He was such a nice quiet guy.”

He was quiet all right, quietly festering his negative emotions.

A person has to use judgment and not pick at straws. Some of you have noticed there have been a number of challenging comments in the past that I have ignored. In these cases I have judged this to be the harmless path, but when an important issue surfaces that is likely to come up again and again the best time to put all feelings, facts and discussions on the table is the present.

As it is if we do not take a stand on teaching the importance of union in singing the Song it would not be long before a dozen group members would be promoting a dozen different versions to the point that new members would be confused as to what version they are supposed to say and have no idea about the potential union possible.

When conflict does arise there are several rules of engagement in following the harmless path.

(1) No name-calling or intentional insulting

(2) No matter how rough the waters are, look upon the opposing person’s soul and see the Christ within, worthy of your love and understanding.

(3) The person you are in conflict with may feel you have a grudge against him so as soon as your views are presented give an increase of love to show that you hold no grievance.

(4) In the midst of the conflict try and find points of agreement and positive things to say about the person in question

(5) Make sure nothing disturbs your inner piece and only allow yourself to hold good feelings toward all involved. This is only accomplished through the making of a definite decision.

It takes a lot of wisdom to follow the harmless path because many actions we can take that seem to be beneficial can be harmful. Then there are others that seem to be harmful that are the harmless path in the long run.

For instance, it would seem to be a good thing to do all you can to enlighten everyone you can, but there are many people who are not ready for higher truth and it would be harmful to them to bring them into it before they are ready. This is why the working through free will is so important.

I have to admit my favorite quote from the group comes from Marylin:

“If doing NO harm turns me into a wimp, then so be it.”

Then she almost topped this by saying:

“I have also recently found that by blessing the porno Spam, it has become less all by itself.”

I had to chuckle at the image of Marylin blessing porno Spam.

Sometimes you have to make an aggressive or gutsy move to follow the harmless path, but then there are many other times you will look like a wimp and have to take some ribbing for it. When this occurs we will all need Marylin’s attitude and say: “What the hell, if I look like a wimp, so be it.”

Examples:

(1) Your friends are all passing around a harmful, but stimulating drug. You feel it will be harmful to your body so you refuse and look like a wimp.

(2) You bump into a guy who insults your mother. You decide to smile at him and be on your way. Your friends really think you have wimped out here.

(3) Your spouse/lover calls you a bastard and you do not throw an insult back, but try and show love instead. Now even he/she calls you a wimp.

The group has said some great things about this subject. Allow me to quote:

It gets a bit tricky deciding what is harmful. A person might say that someone who mugged them, harmed them. This is true in some ways. But it might not be true in the sense that such an event might actually be just what that person needed as a way of balancing his/her own violent behavior toward others in a past life (a bit like Elizabeth with her MS).

Now let us contemplate quality number 15 – trust

Question: What are the areas where the disciple needs to demonstrate his trustworthiness as far as the inner teachers are concerned?

How much should he trust others?

McCall Gathering 2007, Part 47

This entry is part 47 of 54 in the series McCall Gathering 2007

The Labor of Libra Explained

JJ: What do you suppose the wild bore represents?

Audience: Inaudible

JJ: The bore represents our lower nature that is out of control again, particularly the emotional nature and the earthly nature, so he was told to go and capture it and not to kill it. Now remember in the last labor he wore the skin – he killed the lion and he has now a new personality, one that is woven from his own thoughts, one that will serve him well. This time he has to have further dominance not by killing but by capturing the wild bore – there are still wild parts of himself that must be tamed. Once a labor is accomplished then we come back in an entirely different life and wild things begin to grow again, so again and again we have to tame these wild things. So Hercules had to tame this wild bore and once again he had a hard time finding his quest and he comes across these two centaurs What do these centaurs represent?

Audience: Guards, centaurs are guards aren’t they?

JJ: One of them was kind of on guard.

Audience: Centaurs have a lower half of an animal a horse and the upper half is man so they are not fully human.

JJ: The two centaurs had names and one was Cherion, which means good thought and the other was called Pholos, which means bodily strength. The test was to show control of the emotional, astral and desire nature in whatever forms it may take. Often times in our quest to maintain dominance in our own nature we get discouraged and we give up for a period of time.

Lets take the emotion of anger. Many people have a lot trouble with anger and they enter into anger management programs. People go through these programs and it does not seem to help them. Take Lindsey Lohan for instance – she goes through her problems and goes to rehab and a week later she comes out and has the same problem again.

We get discouraged because we try to handle the lower nature and get it under our mastery and then the problem resurfaces again and we get discouraged. So we meet the centaurs which is half animal and half man and the animal part really likes to let loose and party and the man part is responsible and guards the camp and valuables What is interesting is they have this wine and the wine is to be shared by the brotherhood, what is the symbolism behind the wine?

Audience: It could be like Christ energy or spiritual energy or some kind energy of this nature.

JJ: The wine symbolizes the group life. There are certain things that are only beneficial when shared as a group. For instance, we as a group create a life energy that flows through us when we are together that if we try to attain this just by ourselves – it is just not available. Then there are certain things that we can have by ourselves that we can’t have as a group.

This wine was dedicated to the group and wine is often symbolic of the spiritual flow. The spiritual flow is designated to be shared as a group and what they did is they shared it away from the group and instead of having the spiritual flow it became a very carnal flow of lower type energy that reached down to the lower levels, and they got drunk.

They got drunk and out of control symbolizing that the spiritual energy of the life of the God within. When not used properly this gets us drunk on its own power so to speak. So we become out of control and I have seen this in quite a number of people throughout my life.

When they have a touch of the higher energies and do not share it with the group and want to keep it for themselves it makes them drunk on their own power. The life of God must be shared as a group rather than just keeping it to ourselves. It must be shared with all the people willing to receive it.

There is another great lesson to be learned. Hercules had the idea that he was not going to create any harm this time so he went with no weapons and yet his plan did not materialize. Why was that it the he vowed to be harmless yet he wound up hurting and killing some? What mistake did he make?

Audience: He took his eye off the ball?

JJ: No

Audience: He got off the path?

JJ: No

Have you ever this happen in your life? You say I am going to do this and the situation seems to change and you wind up doing something entirely different than you had planned and it didn’t work out?

Audience: Is it like in the Secret where they said people were treating this guy bad and he kept putting attention on the one thing and it just kept coming to him.

JJ: That could be an ingredient but it is not the main ingredient.

Lets say someone comes up to you and really presses a button and makes you angry and you have committed yourself not to get angry but this person says something so cruel or outrageous that there is no way that you cannot avoid telling him off. Have you ever had this happen?

Audience: Oh yes.

JJ: What could you have done to prepare yourself that you could have handled that situation without getting angry?

Audience: If I would have known going in that this person is probably going to say something then I would have been prepared to let it roll off of me because I would have had my guards up and ready. But if I am not prepared and pretend like that person is not going to hurt me then they usually can get to me.

JJ: That is a really good point. If you are prepared for the situation and you have seen it ahead of time then you can also prepare your reaction for it. But if someone comes to you out of the blue with something totally unexpected -what happens is you do not really know how to handle it.

For instance a person came to Artie and asked for a full refund for this symposium just before it started. We did not expect anyone to ask for a full refund and we did had not thought of how to handle it so Artie gave the money back. Afterwards we thought, well that really comes out of our pocket because we already had to pay for the food and the lodging whether they come or not so why in the heck did we do that? We should have at least charged him enough to cover the expenses we incurred for him.

We should have thought about that before hand and because we had not thought about it we were caught off guard for they wanted us to make the decision right then. We did not think carefully enough about what was fair and what was not fair – we were just thinking about what they wanted so the guy caught us off guard.

Have you ever been caught off guard like that? Especially by people that want something from you – that is where it really catches you off guard. So the key here is that Hercules did not envision all the possibilities that could happen to him. He just made one commitment that he was not going to kill anybody or hurt anybody and he was going to be harmless.

Well that is not enough. Just saying you are not going to get angry will not do it. Saying I am not going to react to a situation or I am not going to loan money to deadbeats is not going to do it. You have to visualize what is going to happen to you in the future – see the events before they come – project your life into the future for the day, the week, the month, the years and years to come.

Think of the people that you know who are close to you in your life, think of the things that they will ask you in the future and then visualize what how you are going to respond. The more you see into your future and plan what you will do and how you will do it in different situations, the more control you will have in your life. If Hercules would have looked into the future and thought, I am going to get discouraged if it takes me a long time and first of all he could have decided that he was not going to get discouraged and if he could have decided in advance not to get discouraged no matter how long it took then he would not have stopped and made friends with the centaur and taken this detour.

Once he made friends with he centaur he should have thought ahead and said to himself, won’t the brotherhood be upset if they find out we are drinking this wine because it is dedicated to the brotherhood? But he did not think about this because he was not looking ahead into the future. This is an important item that many of us overlook. We do not think to look into the future and see everything that is going to happen and visualize what we are going to do, what we are going to say, how we are going to react and how we are going to manipulate the situation to the best advantage of ourselves and the whole.

If you can do this one thing it will give a lot more control over your destiny. Now I really try to do this and still once in a while I am caught off guard. I am not caught off guard too much; certainly not like when I was younger. We were caught off guard because it hit us suddenly and we had just not thought about it and you will always be hit with things that you don’t think about and when you are hit with things that you do not think about in advance you will always make the wrong decision, every single time. Like we made the wrong decision on this and it was an unfair decision that we made to the other persons advantage. But every time you are caught off guard you will make the wrong decision.

I notice in my life that every time I have been caught off guard I make the decision in line with the least resistance. This is the one that is easiest to make and is almost always the wrong one and you end up giving yourself a hard time about it causing yourself more grief than was necessary. So think of the people in your life that may take advantage of you. It is like playing chess – think of their next move and then think of your move. When they make their move you will catch them off guard because then when they make that move they will anticipate that you will do X, Y, or Z and instead you will do A, B, and C, and it will somewhat flabbergast them because they will not be expecting it.

One thing Hercules learned also was to enjoy himself, but he went to the extreme with the centaurs and enjoyed himself too much. He was told to take the time to eat and drink and he did but he went too far. This is one of the lessons that we need to learn in this sign and that is to not go to the extreme and to take the time to enjoy ourselves, to eat, drink, and make friends but also to project ourselves into the future and avoid the pitfalls and still maintain control of your destiny and avoid the extreme.

Then as he was going down the hill with the bore instead of tying it up or killing it he made fun of the it and making fun of the bore, who represents the lower personality, means he made of fun of himself using his lower personality. Some of the best comedians do this, like say Robin Williams, for instance. Some of the best comedians will make fun of themselves and this turns their personality from an irritating thing to an enjoyable thing. So where the strong personality can be irritating, if used correctly is fun to watch and also harmless.

McCall Gathering 2007, Part 35

This entry is part 35 of 54 in the series McCall Gathering 2007

Harmlessness

JJ: The next labor Hercules is given the assignment to capture the Cretan bull. We are moving into the sign of Taurus now.

Audience: So please explain the message of Aries.

JJ: The message of Aries is, we have to control our unruly thoughts and this can only be done with soul contact. Without soul contact we can go to church and learn all kinds of lessons of how we can control our thoughts but they will still not be under control. It can only be done through the work of the soul because only through the work of the soul can we see what is harmless and what is not harmless. In other words harmlessness is the true message of Aries. And only through the soul can we see the true harmless way.

If we have a cut and dry idea about what is harmless and what is not then we will almost always be wrong. For instance, let’s talk about going to war. Everybody says that going to war can’t be the path of harmlessness, but say during World War II the path of harmlessness was to go to war against Hitler and without defeating him there would have been much greater harm than if we did not defeat him. So we were forced to go to war against Hitler.

Sometimes the most harmless path still creates quite a bit of friction and only through the soul can you tell for sure. Sometimes you have two decisions, one is the harmless path and another leads to great harm but it seems to the personality that the cut and dry method is the best. If we used black and white method in World War II like a love your neighbor type thing and if everybody said well lets just love Hitler and lets not fight him – this was not the harmless path. It takes a certain amount of soul contact to always be able to tell the harmless path.

It is difficult for people to see this until the soul is connected. If we turn it over to the personality and the souls thinks it is so simple, the personality should be able to understand harmlessness and right thought but sooner or later it gets to see and it gets trampled over.

It is difficult for people to see this until the soul is connected. If we turn decisions over to the personality that are simple to the soul then the person get run over by the wild horses of illusion. Just like in World War II if we had just tried love and peace with Hitler we would have been trampled over by the wild horses of Hitler and subdued.

Harmlessness is the key to liberation, and harmlessness is very elusive because sometimes you have a choice between one thing that seems to produce great harm and another choice seems to produce harm also but maybe not as great. Sometimes you have the choice between the lesser of two evils. And if you keep making the right choice eventually you enter the path of harmlessness where your karma is paid off to the point where you can live a fairly unobstructed life.

What is interesting with harmlessness is that perhaps the most harmless person in our history was Jesus yet He was not looked upon as harmless. People hated Him. They wanted to kill Him and he offended so many people that He made this statement to His disciples, “Blessed is he who is not offended in me.”

Now a lot of people that have not studied His life carefully look on Him like some type of flower child where people were singing praises of him and so on, but He created so much of a stir that He mad that statement, “Blessed is He that is not offended in me.” Almost every teacher that teaches the next step up has the same problem because the next step up is always uncomfortable and we always want to go the line of least resistance.

If you were a good musician in your last life, you will be born in this life with a desire to be a musician all over again because that is what you are good at. You may want to be a musician but maybe your soul says, well you have already learned everything to know about music in your last life so now you have to learn something new. This life you have to learn to work with your hands and be a carpenter. Well I do not like that you say but circumstances keep forcing you in that direction and so something will happen.

If you look at your life when you were younger at what you wanted to do you will usually find that you did not wind up doing that thing. I know that is what happened with me. I wanted to build rockets to go to Mars and I have not built any such rockets. I wound up doing something entirely different.

So we often wind up doing something entirely different because we’ve mastered certain lessons and that next lesson is uncomfortable and that is why the Avatars of the race, the great teachers, the great innovators have always had a difficult problem because they are taking people up to the next step and that next step is always uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable for the individual, it is uncomfortable for the group and it is uncomfortable for the world. That is why somebody like Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves, wound up with someone killing him because he took a step that had to be taken and in hind site it was a wonderful step but if you were there it was a very uncomfortable step.

McCall Gathering, 2007, Part 21

This entry is part 21 of 54 in the series McCall Gathering 2007

Applying Harmlessness

Susan: I had a really interesting situation at my job, we think one of the sub contractors is stealing things from us and I have some pretty good evidence against him and I am trying to convince the builder to not pay him on certain bills because he is stealing from us and I checked up on him every 2 hours and all the evidence leads to him and I am not paying him on this job or I am going to subtract what he took. My boss looks at me and says that we are not going to be vindictive if he does the job then we are going to pay him, this is a separate issue. I could not believe it. My boss was not going to allow what that mans perceived actions were determine what his actions would be.

JJ: That is a good point and it reminds me of a story of this guy in line waiting to buy a newspaper and the guy in front of had the wrong change or something like that and he just started to verbally bash the clerk and the clerk responded with kindness and treated him nice, then the guy left and the next guy in line said, how can you allow someone to talk to you like that without lashing back at him? The clerk answered, I just made up my mind that I was not going to let people like that control my behavior and if I lash out back at him then he is controlling my behavior, I decide what my behavior is going to be and so I decided that I was going to be nice to everyone and that of course includes him.

Reminds of one time when I was selling advertising and when you are in phone sales you get some fairly aggravated people. It was not as bad back then as it is now as there were not that many telephone salespeople. I called up this one guy and he was really in a bad mood or something, he just raked me over the coals and I was really nice to him and just took it then we hung up. A few minutes later the phone rings and it was him and he was just apologizing and he said, “you know you were so nice to me that it made me feel bad, so how much is that ad?” He wanted to buy an ad because of guilt. I was so nice to him and he started comparing his behavior to mine and it made him feel ashamed of himself. So every once in while a good deed does help.

I remember the story the other day on the news that this robber broke into this family’s home and they invited him to sit down and eat dinner and have a glass of wine with them and he did and when it was it was all over the robber says can we have a group hug.

Audience: Laughter

JJ: And so they gave him a group hug and the robber left without robbing them. This made the national news because it was so odd. A lot of people made fun of the story saying that was really stupid for the family to treat the robber that way and others were praising the family but really once in a while the golden rule that Jesus taught us works.

Now you have to use your judgment, the Tibetan says that a true dark brother is not influenced by anything of this nature that you will do. He will go after what he wants and he will have absolutely no sympathy or understanding of any act goodness that you do towards him – it will have absolutely no impact on him at all. But the person who is still in touch with the soul, like this robber, who was in a bad place but his soul was still trying to reach him and these people were trying to influence him.

The same thing with turning the other cheek – if you turn the other cheek to someone who still has a thread connected to his soul and he slaps you on the other cheek – you think, mmm, that did not feel right. Now, if he thinks you are a terrible person slapping you on the other cheek may feel good to him but if you do no harm and actually turn the other cheek the person with a bit of soul contact who slaps the other cheek will think, “that just did not feel right.”

It affects the person who still has a thread connected to his soul. But when the thread is disconnected from the soul then everything you do will have no effect on him. Let us take Hitler for example, he actually taught the people under him to have no sympathy to the Jews. He said, now when you go out and you control these people you have to think of the vision so to speak, what we are trying accomplish, and this will be your only objective. Have no sympathy for their feelings or for them as human beings. You have to look on them as objects that have to put out of the way of our road so that we can progress forward.

So he taught the people under him to have no feeling and this is why the Nazis began to look at the subjects under them as people in a chess game with no human empathy. They had interplay with each other but not for the people they were subjecting and this is why they were able to do the atrocities they did because they did not allow any love, sensitivity, or good will to get in the way.

There are people like that and when we sense these people the best thing to do is use the principle of attrition and stay out of their path so you do not get into their consciousness. Do not attempt to do any good will to those who you sense that are on the dark path, because these types of people are completely unreachable. Most people can still be reached. The trouble with the Nazis is they were trained. Most of the Nazis still had a thread connecting their soul but Hitler trained them to over look that thread. This is what made them so cruel for they were trained to overlook the possibility that they had any soul contact.

Audience: How often in your perception do people step back from the edge of this darkness?

JJ: Once they get so far it is impossible for them to go back.

Audience: How often do you see it because your character in the book is like that in that other planet?

JJ: All of us in our journey go pretty close to the edge and what happens when you get close to the edge is that your soul makes every attempt to bring you back and in most cases it will eventually be successful for it has put you through so much pain because of your mistakes that you eventually ask the question: Why God? And then you start searching.

Audience: What or where is the edge to going away from soul contact completely? Like to become so cold and hardened like the Nazis were?

JJ: You see the Nazis did not think they were doing anything wrong but just following orders. On reflection, after the war they saw it was the wrong thing to do but did not realize it at the time. Many of them still had that link to the soul but Hitler taught them to overlook that link. There were a handful at the head of the Nazis that probably had severed the link completely.

Audience: So you become totally insensitive, is that what you mean?

JJ: Yes the dark side is what Jesus calls sinning against the Holy Ghost or we could call it sinning against the Soul. The fact is that we all go through a period of selfishness in our evolution but then our selfishness takes us dead ends and unhappiness, and we start to examine ourselves and ask why am I unhappy? Maybe you were rich and good-looking but still unhappy. Selfishness brought the pilgrim a lot of things and he is not happy with it. So he begins to ask, “what can I do to make my life happy?”

Through a period of pain most people begin to understand love and goodwill toward men and that we are all brothers and then start to achieve soul contact. But there are still a handful of people that think they are just not selfish enough and need to be more selfish still until they get control of their surroundings. These are the people that enter the real dangerous territory and eventually what happens to these that take the dark path is they sever the link with their soul completely and create a lower vibration of matter that surrounds them that is almost like an extra vehicle that they inhabit. They are distant from the soul and incapable of being touched by it. When they move over into this vibration where the soul cannot be reached then they are on the dark path.

Audience: Some people that I have encountered are simply born dark.

JJ: It is possible that they choose the dark path in a past life. Then in this life they would still be on it. Once they get so far along on the dark path then they cannot even incarnate because their vibration is so low.

Audience: Can they incarnate for a while even after there is no turning back?

JJ: Hitler will be probably come back, and I am not looking forward to the day that he does. It is possible and it also possible that his vibration is so low that he can’t come back for some time.

Audience: It could very well be though that this is not our fault, I understand that we have the right to choose and the ability as human beings to make decisions, we can decide to be. Remember that.

JJ: Do you mean it is not the person’s fault if he chooses the dark path?

Audience: This is really complicated, because some people just do not have the ability to make a decision not to be dark.

JJ: Yes they do, everybody has the ability to make soul contact. What you are thinking of is a person in a state of lower evolution that is just selfish and he has to go with the path of least resistance. You are probably thinking of that type of person who does not seem to have much power over where he goes.

Audience: I see these people a lot in life and ignorance is their cue here and they just do not have a clue.

JJ; But, you do not see a dark brother very often. Most people you see still have a thread to their soul but they are just hard to deal with and very selfish, but most of these people will eventually reach a point to where they will turn around.

Now there are a handful of people that do not make the turning point and never walk the path of light. The dark path is chosen after the second imitation when the person has actually achieved a degree of soul contact then he overcomes a certain amount of glamour Then he is eventually faced with a choice, and he sees that choice clearly. He sees the choice between the soul and the self.

The soul keeps trying to bring the wayward entity back until, (energy follows thought) he puts so much attention into his self, which the Tibetan calls the “not self” because it is not really the real in the long run. He then creates a body vibration around him that is not real and his consciousness goes into this body and this body vibration is insulated from the soul. Now it is different than thinking that God is punishing him because He is denying the soul. That is not he way it works. It is the other way around the person puts himself in a situation where he cannot reach out to the soul.

He is in what is called esoterically called the eighth sphere of matter. This is a vibration below even regular matter where he allows himself to be immersed in powerful thought forms that are totally insulated from the soul and thus he has no more soul contact. So what happens to this brother over a long period of time is his personality begins to break down and he is on the path of death because he has no life flow coming into him. All that he has evolved into begins to break down and then he has to wait until a brand new solar system is created billions of years in the future in order to start his evolution all over again. That is why Jesus spoke of some people saying that it would have been better for this guy if he had never been born because it causes him to loose all his progression. It takes a considerable amount of time to commit this, so to speak, unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit where he is denied soul contact. The person is given chance after chance until he gets himself completely insulated from the soul. All are saved from this situation except for a handful that is absolutely determined to follow selfish path. Most of those we see around us that are really annoying eventually will find the path of light and follow it. The dark brother is completely untouched by anything from the soul. He may fake it and try to deceive you and say, yes I am into soul contact and all that but internally his plan is the opposite of what he projects.
