In this opening chapter of "The Immortal" series, the character of Joe briefly begins by briefly describing various aspects of his adult life, his desire to write, and the love of his life -- Elizabeth -- who, in the prime of her life is struck down by a life-threatening illness.
It is the Christmas holiday season, and one day -- after over a discouraging year of battling the disease together, as Joe awoke from a sound nights sleep, he heard a strange sound of bells. Strange, because the sound of these bells were unlike the sound of any other bells he had ever heard before.

In this chapter Joe discovers the source of the bells through a chance encounter at the super market chain store Albertson's right in Boise, Idaho!

Joe hears the bells again, and goes back to Albertson's. This time he stops and engages the bell ringer in light conversation, and yet is somehow impressed with the man who is a Salvation Army bellringer by the name of John. Joes accepts an invitation to have coffee with the bellringer. Little does Joe know how accepting this invitation and a simple cup of coffee is going to lead him on a journey that will change his life forever.
