Study Guide 4
All You Need Is Love
Syllabus
Content:
Love is probably the most frequently acknowledged need of mankind for nearly everyone to some degree is actively seeking it in some way, shape or form.
Why do the lyrics from the Beatles song from which the title of this Study Guide was taken "All You Need Is Love" seem to ring so true for so many?
Regardless of how important and necessary we consider the manifestation of Love to be, it appears that for a variety of reasons Love has been very difficult for mankind to define, understand and successfully engage or remain engaged in. And despite their experience of it, or lack thereof, Love still remains a steadfast focus of desire, and a favorite topic of and for popular songs, movies and all forms of consumer advertisements while simultaneously remaining one of the most illusive goals, and possibly one of life's greatest mysteries.
Overall, would you characterize Love as it is taught, communicated, and experienced as being highly desirable, yet somehow potentially unobtainable, or something to be avoided altogether?
Regardless of the reality, almost all of us have some self-styled perception as to what Love should be or needs to be. Most are convinced that we know Love when we see, feel and/or experience it--and when it is present and when it is not.
Whether the preconception of Love has come from a popular love song, or played out before our eyes in a script written for a movie; and even if we are fortunate enough to have been exposed to real-life examples of it, it appears that none of this guarantees its reproducibility.
Could it be that the answer to Love lies in our misunderstanding of one of the most important and basic lessons in life, and possibly in the very reason and purpose of our existence?
To help you determine whether you might benefit from the contents of this Study Guide, read through the questions below and see if and how well you can answer them. The content of this study guide consists of reading assignments which are comprised of selected readings and references in the form of quotes, "seed thoughts," excerpts and passages that focus on the topic of Love. The intention is to not only answer questions similar to those above, but also cause other questions to arise which you may have not yet experienced or become aware of.
Aside from the syllabus portion of this study guide, all reading assignments were selected and extracted verbatim from the thousands of spiritual and/or inspired teachings and writings of author and spiritual teacher Joseph John (JJ) Dewey located either in The Keys Archives located on his web site, or from published hardcopy versions of his books.
The topic and reading assignments for this study guide were selected using a mindful and purposeful approach using the teachings and principles covered in Study Guide 1 which includes the repeated and continual study and contemplation of the entire body of "inspired" writings, teachings and works as presented by author and spiritual teacher Joseph John (JJ) Dewey.
Additionally, the reading assignments for this study guide and other guides have been organized in a conscious sequential fashion designed to expose and expand the horizons of reader's understanding and awareness beyond the preconceptions, common definitions, and typical experiences associated with the word "Love." This sequential arrangement of reading assignments is intended to assist the reader in constructing their own personal 'spiritual stairway and/or ladder' which they can utilize to lift themselves up, move themselves forward, and help them discover, realize and reach their desired goals as it relates to not only Love and the many concepts that affect it, and that it affects, but to assist in their continued spiritual development.
This same conscious, sequential fashion that is applied to this presentation of the teachings and principles as espoused by JJ Dewey is also reflected in the selection of the topics for; and, from study guide to study guide. For instance, based upon the topics covered in previous study guides, the reader should, in addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired in this study guide, be able to use and apply the tools of prayer, meditation and contemplation, and their knowledge of relationships in assessing the teachings and principles revolving around this expanded definition of the soul that are presented in this study guide.
We are not advocating that the approach in this or other study guides as being the sole, or even necessarily the best approach to the study of this topic or any of the teachings of JJ Dewey. In fact, all are encouraged to seek out their own path of study should they be so impressed to do so. This and other study guides are merely suggested "jumping-off points ."
Regardless of the approach taken in this study guide or the approach taken by the reader, we are confident that every reader possesses the ability to mentally discern and soulfully confirm the truthfulness (via their inner self or inner voice) of the teachings in this study guide--or of any teaching found anywhere. We are also confident that if approached with a sincere hearth and an open mind, the truth of these teachings can be further confirmed by direct application and incorporation of them into the lives of those who are truly seeking greater knowledge and light.
Learning Objectives:
Once the reader has completed studying and contemplating the assigned readings, they should then be able to:
- Know that in order to talk about Love with any degree of understanding one needs to be able to define it.
- Define and understand what Love is and what Love is NOT.
- Describe, define and differentiate between the two kinds of Love.
- Identify, analyze and evaluate how, what and why you Love.
- Become consciously aware and be able to describe of all of the correspondences between, with, and relating to Love for such concepts as: Light, Hate, Darkness, Magnetism, Attraction, and Repulsion.
- Discover the role that Romantic Love plays with obtaining Soul Contact.
- Understand how that in order for True Love to exist what one must desire and what actions one must always take.
- More effectively act as a wise disciple by sensing and perceiving in advance whether or not Love should be sent; or that which is sent is having or going to have a positive effect of lifting negativity; or whether it is being used by the recipient to increase their own negativity.
- Consciously acknowledge "pit falls and blind spots" associated with the Love of the Personality.
- See that in order for Love to exist--duality must exist. And, therefore there needs to be TWO of something in order to Love, and how that your very existence is a result of God needing something to Love.
- Understand and acknowledge the necessary activity to obtain True Spiritual Love.
- Be aware of the necessary step following the sending forth of Love to ensure and determine the physical evidence necessary to prove that Love is truly present with the sender.

- Recognize that in order to be Loved, one must first Love.
- Comprehend how and why Attachment is NOT Love, but Love of the Personality is Attachment.
- Know the reason why a sexual climax does NOT ensure sexual fulfillment.
- Seek to fully share Heart Energies by moving towards Higher Energies, and to know what those energies are, and know where those energies reside.
- Truly appreciate that when a person engages in casual sex with whoever is willing, that there is generally only a sharing of the Sacral Energies and sometimes a partial sharing of Solar Plexus Energies.
- Come to understand the real goal of lovemaking is to achieve the highest of unions which will enable fulfillment and the ability to make Love simultaneously in the three worlds of human endeavor.
- Describe a guiding principle that those wishing to marry, or enter into a permanent, committed relationship can use to be and remain happy.
- Discuss what the relationship is between the difficulty to define and describe Love relative to Emotional Attachment.
If you found your answers to the questions found in the Content Section in the first part of this syllabus, and the Learning Objectives directly above to stimulate interest, we then invite you to continue to read through the study guide and then proceed to the Assigned Readings, and begin another journey of discovery.
Schedule Of Topics and Readings:
There is not going to be any additional schedule of topics or readings outside of what is identified and/or covered in this study guide. However, this does not mean to indicate that the assigned and/or suggested readings or the sources are a complete or total representation of what JJ Dewey has written and taught concerning this topic. Should you be so impressed to study a subject more deeply, then you must search out his writings further. This does not mean that this study guide may not be modified, and if it is we will publish an announcement highlighting the changes.
The intention of the Keys Welcoming Committee and these Study Guides is not only to introduce you to the writings and teachings of Joseph John Dewey, but to stimulate you to study them on your own, gain greater confidence in yourself and your knowledge of them; and having received "a greater light," and in-turn find themselves motivated to actively and more fully participate at, in and with The Keys Of Knowledge discussion group.
The only reading materials which may be quoted (used as reading assignments) that are not available to you online for free at JJ Dewey's web site are "The Immortal II," "The Lost Key Of The Buddha" and, "Eternal Words." We highly recommend that you purchase all of the "Immortal Series" books and read them. You can purchase them (and other related items) from JJ's online store.
However, as you read, study and contemplate this study guide, you may wish to make your own list and schedule of topics, readings and learning goals.
Points Of Contact:
Should you have any questions and/or comments as it relates to such things as typographical errors, formatting issues and other "instructions" pertaining to the content (messages and/or study guides) posted at the Welcoming Committee at Yahoo, we ask you contact Melva (melvakeys), Chairperson of The Keys Welcoming Committee, and Welcoming Committee group owner, and NOT The Keys Of Knowledge (The Keys) Discussion Group.
However, if you have a question or comment about, on or over a "doctrinal issue," we would prefer you then write an "off topic" message to the The Keys Of Knowledge discussion group at Yahoo. Please insert the letters "OT:" (without quotation marks) preceding description of the subject line of your post. You must be a member to post at The Keys.
Reading Assignments:
As there are reading assignments from "The Book Of Quotes," the student needs to understand what these quotes are and how to use them in order to maximize the learning experience.
First of all, all of the quotes in the referenced chapter were, and/or are taken from the works of JJ Dewey. The quotes for these chapters were selected based upon their ability to transmit a message or teaching in as few words as possible. They are to be used as "seed thoughts" to help the reader in preparing, orienting their minds; and for receiving future direction from their soul on this and other related matters.
When reading these quotations, the reader needs to allow their direction of study to be led by the thoughts and impressions that come to them while they are reading; and even those thoughts and impressions that come to them at some future point in time.
The number assigned to each individual quote found in "The Book Of Quotes" also acts as an active link which will take them to the article from which the quote was extracted.
Note: In order to facilitate the movement onto and between each successive reading assignment, you need to either "bookmark" this page or use your web browser's "BACK" button to return to this page when you have completed each reading assignment.
Reading Assignment 1:
To that end, the reader is encouraged to begin the reading assignments for this Study Guide by proceeding to "The Book Of Quotes" and read and contemplate all the quotes which you are impressed to in chapter of quotations entitled "Affairs Of The Heart."
And because Love is an integral part of almost all relationships, we encourage you to also read and contemplate the quotes found in the chapter entitled "Relationships."
Once you have completed the above exercise, return to this page and proceed with the next and subsequent reading assignments.
Reading Assignment 2:
Read and contemplate the following excerpts, quotes and source articles as you are impressed to:
Source: Love-Wisdom
"Before something can be loved, it must first be understood." (Leonardo De Vinci)
True expressions of love coming from the true heart center are always sent on wings of understanding.
Source: Sending Love
I have been in circumstances where I have sent love to certain ones and the energy greatly increased their negativity. The wise disciple will sense this circumstance in advance and perceive whether or not the energy is going to work, and will transmit accordingly.
The key is this: When you send positive energy and love to another in this condition and you are having a positive effect, you will be able to sense it. If you do not sense that you are lifting the negativity, then it is best to send no energy.
Source: Finding The Blind Spot
Higher spiritual love is not blind, but regular emotional love creates some very hard to see blind spots. We have all seen a friend who is newly "in love" with someone we see is obviously a creep.
Source: With Love
Without duality there can be no love. There can be no love unless there is two of something. One of the great purposes that God created the universe was so love could become manifest. If God had not created us there would be nothing to love. What would a point outside of time and space love?
Karma exists whether you are one with love or separated from love. Love does not negate the energies of the universe but is one of those energies.
Love, as human beings understand it, can only manifest through "becoming"in the world of duality. Where there is no duality there is no power of attraction, for there is nothing to be attracted to. Where there is no attraction there is no love. If we want to manifest love we need to make the best of the world we find ourselves in.
Source: All You Need Is Love
To talk about love with any degree of understanding we need to define it.
To say that Love is a state of being that can be experienced, while you are completely alone, is to theorize about a state that no one in the flesh has ever experienced because it is impossible to ever be alone and have life.
True spiritual love could be said to be a state of BEING actively engaged in service of others, service to the whole or bringing the many into united service.
When one experiences higher spiritual contact, he or she will have a wonderful feeling of Love, but still we have two or more involved. There is you and there is the Holy Spirit that is contacted.
Source: The Response Of Love
Almost everyone you talk to believes they love truly and understand the feelings of love. Indeed there is a universal sense of its direction. But the obstacles to its fullness becoming manifest are legion indeed.
The fact that love sent forth is finding a response in others is physical evidence that love is truly present with the sender.
Source: Discipleship Revealed
It is interesting that Jesus told his disciples that they loved Him because He loved them first. In other words, He did not pick a bunch that was brimming with love, but His own sharing caused the love within all but one to respond, even to the giving of their lives for their friend.
The aspirant may be a big believer in love
The disciple manifests and stimulates love.
The mind is the key that opens the door between the human kingdom and the kingdom of God. This is knowledge that needs to be registered by the seekers of the world who think that "all you need is love."
Love is indeed a key, but it is the key to the correct use and influence of the mind. Thus love unlocks the correct use of mind and mind held steady in the light unlocks the door to the Kingdom of God and accepted discipleship.
Source: Three New Qualities
Attachment is a very misunderstood concept and is often mistaken for virtue. For instance, an attachment of one person toward another is often called love, and this is the only version of love that many people understand. But it is not love; it is attachment, a desire to hold on to a thing or person. True love always involves a desire to serve and to help or enhance, not just a desire to hold on because of a desire to possess.
Source: Selecting A Mate
While it is true that all people want to marry someone they love, they have no guiding principles to use that will assure them they will actually be happy. If they marry the wrong person, they will find that no amount of Herculean effort will bring stability to the marriage. They will find themselves in the most miserable of all circumstances. Even many apparently stable marriages are made of couples who have resigned themselves to their fate because of fear: fear of breaking religious or society rules, fear of being alone, fear of a lowered standard of living, fear of hurting the children, etc.
Source: Sex And Knowing God
Those who do not share the heart energies will always feel that something is lacking in their sex life even if they reach a full physical climax with each act.
The highest major area to be shared is the head centers, or the world of the mind. The heart centers can be shared when people advance into the higher use of the mind. These people have understood how to work with mental substance and have learned the use of common sense and unselfish love.
The mind sensations are higher than the heart just as the sun is higher than the moon, and a grand celestial knowing and union at three levels is experienced that goes far beyond any result produced by a sensuous sex manual.
Source: Correct Use Of Energy
When a person engages in casual sex with whoever is willing, there is generally only a sharing of the sacral energies and sometimes a partial sharing of solar plexus energies. When a person is more selective about his sex partners and tries to pick only those with whom he feels some affinity or "love" toward, then there can be close to a full sharing of both sacral and solar plexus centers.
To prepare oneself for a full sharing, one must mentally accept the possibility of being hurt, be prepared to deal with it if it comes, and then dismiss it from the mind. Then one must make a covenant (marriage or private covenant) with someone whom he believes he can trust. Then he should make a concentrated effort to lower all the protective walls and maintain a full communication and sharing. If both parties feel secure in their covenant, are matched with the correct mate, and control desire by honoring their agreement, they may experience the sharing of the higher heart energies. During intercourse, they should make a concentrated effort to release the pure energies of love from the heart with no inhibition.
Source: The Meeting Of the Minds
Presently, highly developed men and women share a small endowment of mental energy, but that interplay they may feel in the mind during lovemaking and other times is generally only a slight foreshadowing to the greater union to come.
The question then naturally arises as to what a couple must do to achieve this, the highest of unions, so man and woman can achieve fulfillment and make love simultaneously in the three worlds of human endeavor.
Source: Examples Of Higher Sharing
Highly evolved people seek not for fulfillment on spiritual levels only, but view all levels as one great chord where all the notes must vibrate to produce harmony. The physical and emotional notes must be played as well as the higher ones.
The physical and emotional worlds are as much of a creation of God as are the higher worlds, and when all creation is viewed as one, all things are spiritual. All energies are spiritual if they are directed toward the evolutionary path. To be evolutionary, the physical and emotional energies must adjust their vibration so they are in harmony with the heart and mind energies.
Source: The Mystery Of Romantic Energy
To understand the sharing principle, one must look upon all persons as units of desire energy. Each person, male and female, possesses one unit each of solar plexus energy; this is the energy of desire and romantic love. The sharing of this energy must be carefully regulated by law because the wrong dispersal of it creates many of the negative emotions, feelings, and actions of mankind. Feelings of jealousy, anger, and emptiness primarily result when this law is broken and those who suffer these feelings usually have no idea as to the root cause.
Each person possesses one unit of desire energy. As long as he or she maintains a complete and full unit of this energy, he will not be afflicted with jealousy, anger or emptiness. For instance, if a person has little association with or desire for the opposite sex and is content to be alone and keep this unit of desire energy all to himself, he will maintain the one unit within him and not suffer jealousy, anger or emptiness because of relationships. When, however, he meets a potential mate he likes, sends out desire energy, and develops a romantic love toward him or her, he finds that he is no longer a complete energy unit. To be complete, the female must send to him the same amount of desire energy that he sends to her. If he does not receive it, he will feel unbalanced and will be forced, sooner or later, by his nature to take his energy back and once again become stable.
Let us point out the key to romantic stability which is this: Each person has one unit of romantic energy and when the sharing of that energy begins, the amount shared must be returned to maintain peace and stability.
Source: The Seven Needs
This is probably the most frequently acknowledged need of mankind for nearly everyone is active in some degree in seeking love. Giving is therefore very important, for it is an active expression of love.
Love has been very difficult for mankind to define because there are two basic types, and people see what love is from their angle of vision and point of evolution.
The most common love is the love of the personality, or the lower self. The second, and higher form of its expression, is the love of the Soul, or the higher self. The manner in which we give and receive love is dependent on our point in spiritual evolution. If our consciousness has attained contact with our higher selves, or souls, then we can love others as souls. This is an unselfish love. If we have no contact with the higher self then we will love others as personalities. This is a more selfish and possessive love from a higher point of view and is merely a mirrored reflection of true soul love. It may be more appropriately called attachment. Generally, two people get married because they like each other's personalities and become attached to them. In this situation if there should be a personality change, then love, or attachment, would cease.
Those who love on the personality level need to be with, and be possessed by someone, need to be pleased, and need affection and, or sex.
Source: The Seven Needs, Part 2
The marriage relationship is so sought after by many because it fills a great need for order. In fact, many people get married more to stabilize their lives than for love. Marriage brings in the new ordered sequence of seeing someone you care for on a cyclic basis Any newly established cyclic routine brings additional order and therefore, more purpose in people's lives. When children arrive, new cyclic encounters occur and greater stability reached. These ordered relationships, can, if they are structured correctly, bring more fullness in a person's life.
Couples should seek to establish mini-sacraments in their relationship: A bottle of wine on a special occasion, getting an ice cream after a movie, collapsing in each other's arms after the kids are in bed, kissing each other on going and returning from work, saying "I love you" before going to bed, etc. These little rituals we all establish help stabilize a relationship through order. If we lack these little ceremonies it will be found to be advantageous to consciously create a few.
Source: Making The Negative Positive
In the Greek there are three words for love. The reason Love is so hard to define in English is because it is used on so many different levels and refers to any kind of emotional attachment. Let try and put into words the most universal meaning:
"Love is the urge to be one with, or keep within one's sphere of influence, that which he finds desirable."
Love is the most important emotion because it is the vine from which all others are branches. No emotion or feeling at all would exist if some degree of love did not appear first.
Wherever there is a disturbance of the interplay of love or desire there will be certain negative feelings arise. The most important point is for them not to lead us further into deception. This is done by acknowledging the feeling and directing it constructively.
By being honest communicators of our feelings all negativity is neutralized and eventually the individual masters circumstances so he can keep his mind centered in the higher love energy continually. Then, at least for him, there will be "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to men."
Source: Love In Action
Just talking about love, defining love, proclaiming love, mystifying love, magnifying love, writing of love, romancing love, idealizing love etc does not hold a candle to one real act of love. One act of helping another in true need creates more love that all the metaphysical proclaiming in the world.
Source: Teachings Continued
Now the interesting thing about love is this. When another person performs a true unselfish act of love in our direction, a feeling of love is registered in our breasts. This feeling is the same for all of us. Even though we all feel the same energy when love is registered, no two of us seem to be able to explain what we felt in the same way.
So we have a feeling that we all register and sense in a similar way, yet we all define and express it differently. It is quite possible to take two people who have felt the same energy of love, yet argue about what it is, because the words they chose to communicate the word veil the actual truth of the experience that both have felt in the same way.
This is the problem of communicating from personality to personality. Two personalities can take exactly the same experience, yet present it in such different ways, that the two will soon be swearing that the other guy has no idea what love is.
The solution is soul-to-soul communication rather than personality-to-personality. When there is soul-to-soul communication concerning love (or any other subject) why is there perfect communication even though the two may have different ways of explaining it?
Source: Falling In Love
The first step a person does make toward shared soul contact is falling in love.
Think a moment. What causes a person to fall in love with another? What makes it happen is that the couple, for a short period, overlooks every possible fault and imperfection in the loved one, even if those faults are glaring to friends and family. When you look in the eyes of another and see only perfection what do you see? You see the face of Christ and this opens the door of the soul.
Thanks to the attractive forces of the polarities, most males and females in relationship feel the power of the soul through romantic love. The power of this love works to give average people a belief in the soul that stays with them for many lifetimes, until the time comes that they begin to hear the still small voice and move on to higher spiritual feelings.
Source: Poetry In Motion
Note: The following is only one of four poems written by JJ Dewey on Love that can be read at the above referenced article.
Wholeness
We have both yearned for oneness over many lifetimes.
I can feel it.
You have called out for your other half many times over thousands of years.
I have heard it.
I have put forth the thought that I need someone like you to complete me and give me strength to do what I know I must do.
I have spoken it.
Poetic thoughts of you over a dozen lifetimes fill my mind.
I have written them.
The soft melodies of the universe filters through your soul into mine.
I have sung them.
The powers and Gods that be have blessed our Union.
I accept it.
The time is come to be one in everlasting Love.
Let US do it.
Source: Love Manifesting
The initiative to tread the path of love is yours alone, but our growth in love as well as light is dependent on others to a great degree.
Love draws the many into the One, but when the One is manifest love has served its purpose until the many come forth again.
Feelings cannot be freed from the emotions because without emotion there is no feeling. Having met you in person and communicating with you over a long period of time I can sense much feeling and emotion within you, but it must be truly faced and harmlessly directed so union with others can manifest causing greater love to manifest for the power of love is revealed as the many come into the One.
Emotions are a part of our complete self and without completeness there is not fullness of love.
Plant a seed that will grow and light the way to full realization of love for unless this happens you are in danger of substituting the love you do understand with illusionary love you do not understand.
Source: All Things Being Equal
Perfect love casteth out fear, but it does not prevent the pilgrim from encountering and facing the fear.
There is a certain amount of illusion behind most fears, but there is also great illusion behind most proclamations of love. Unraveling the real fear and mastering it is as important as discovering the real love of God and accepting it.
Source: How-To Of Soul
A love of the truth and a certain amount of ability to perceive light and truth is essential. Unfortunately, almost all, high and low, claim to love truth and think they are as good as the next guy in perceiving it.
The truth is that only a handful truly loves truth. The vast majority love their own egos or their attachment to illusions and/or traditions or their extreme side.
Another key in unlocking the soul is the demonstration of love to others through service.
Saying you love truth is not enough. You must recognize truth so you know what to love. Saying you love others is not enough. Love must be demonstrated by you and felt by those you serve.
Source: Magnetism
What is the primary Law of Love? The key word is magnetism. The basic law could be worded as: "Magnetic force originates from a center that draws all things in the periphery to itself. Wherever there are two or more creations of God there will exist a magnetic force (or essential Love) which draws them together toward unity." Hence the attraction of the Sun to the earth is an aspect of Love as is the earth toward the moon.
But isn't love supposed to be warm and fuzzy? Magnetism seems like such a lifeless word. Not when you consider that life dwells with all things. When the earth responds to the gravity or magnetic power of the Sun it feels a pull through the power of love within it's own consciousness just as you may through the attraction you have to a member of the opposite sex.
The more vehicles in another that you feel the magnetic pull from the more you will love. Many think they are in love when they find themselves attracted to the beautiful physical body of another. But this same person will find himself even more in love and experiencing greater magnetic pull when the attraction extends to the emotional body and he wants to be close to those warm emotional feelings.
The more spheres of relationship available to magnetic pull the greater the manifestation of love.
Love exists in all spheres and in all kingdoms, but manifests differently in the human because as a self conscious unit the human experiences an interplay between love and consciousness which creates feelings of peace and joy.
Love manifesting through consciousness produces the dominating good in the universe and gives impulse to all evolution.
Source: The Thinker
The heart center is composed of twelve energy petals that slowly unfold as we evolve toward Spirit. Six are different types of love energy and six are differing types of wisdom energies.
Source: The Divine Polarity
Some express amazement that we could state that Love and Light were the first manifested duality. One objection is that many have the belief that pure light and love are beyond duality. There is also the belief that love has no opposite. Fear, they say, is not the opposite of love because fear has its roots in illusion and love is in the real.
The truth is that Love is a higher reality than fear, but not the ultimate reality and it is true that fear is not its opposite, but nevertheless, it does have an opposite and that opposite is Light.
The question is--how then are Light and Love opposites?
What is Love? Love is the opposite of radiation which sends forth. Love is magnetism which pulls together. When you love someone you are magnetically drawn to them.
Thus light is that radiance which divides the one into the many and love is that magnetic force which pulls the many back into the One. They are very much opposite and this duality is at the basis of creation of all there is that can be seen (light) or felt (love).
Source: Opposites
You can dispel hate with love, but you cannot eliminate love through hate.
Light is that which reveals (or that which is visible) and dark is that which hides. Reality can exist in light or dark in the seen or unseen. Light in its highest essence is the radiation which is seen whereas its true opposite Love is not visible, but lies hid in the esoteric dark of life. Only by descending into the darkest depths can the fullness of love become known.
Christ had to descend below all things so he could rise above all things and manifest the invisible love of God to us.
Love therefore is very closely associated with dark, but is the highest correspondence of the female polarity just as divine light is the highest correspondence to the male polarity.
Example: Male and female in cooperation create new life--a child--a product of light and love to fulfill divine purpose.
Source: The Initiation Of Love
To really appreciate the manifestation of Love which was initiated by the Christ, one has to realize how different the viewpoints, attitudes and group thinking was toward love 2000 years ago. Before Jesus came on the scene the world had no great example of love as a ideal from which to pattern their lives
We think people are selfish today, but 2000 years ago selfishness was much more rampant. People often had children, not out of nurturing love, but because of their usefulness as child laborers. Men often got married for the same reason - not out of love but because the guy needed an unpaid laborer in the family business. When the family income was too low a kid was often sold into slavery to pay the bills.
In the midst of this cruel atmosphere appeared the Christ with a message of love and hope with words such as:
"A new commandment I give unto you - that you love one another."
To love one another may seem like old words today, but at that time they were new and fresh.
The love he taught included more than family and friends for he said to "love your neighbor as yourself." Then he went on to explain that even those considered the enemy are our neighbors.
Then he explained that if we love only those who love us we are no better than publicans and sinners. Instead we must love all people.
He not only taught about love, but demonstrated it. He worked tirelessly in healing the sick, the lame, the blind and outcasts of society. He gave his life in service and apparently received no money for it. "Freely I give," he said.
Near the end he said: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13)
His sacrifice on the cross was far from his only display of love, but that, along with his suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane were certainly two examples that permeated the consciousness of mankind and has stayed there.

The end of all laws of God is that love should manifest and thus Jesus fulfilled this awkward law because love indeed was the end result because of the way He dealt with it.
We will be like Him not because we are capable of being flawless according to black and white obedience to law, but because we have learned to turn every situation into a manifestation of love.

One of the most important things that we can do then is to develop what is called the pure love of Christ. The pure love of Christ is a higher octave of love than the normal sense. The fact that love in the normal sense, as people define it, has degrees or ingredients of selfishness in it - in the fact that I love you for the fact of what you can do for me. But in the pure love of Christ there is no thought of self. There is only the thought of giving it out. When it is given out you actually do benefit a lot from it even though it's not selfish.
The person benefits a lot more by unselfish love than he does by selfish love because with selfish love you don't really get that much back because the other party senses the selfishness and wants selfish love back. When the selfish love is inter played it plays itself out and it only lasts for a period of time then everything begins to fall apart in the relationship. With the eternal love of Christ an eternal stream is created which flows back and forth and never ends. It continues to grow as our awareness and our consciousness grows until we attain a fullness of the consciousness of God.

Mind can even be used in love and romance. The mental person will use logic and reasoning to determine the qualities of a mate necessary to insure happiness and when a prospect is discovered he will use his best mental resources to impress and attract the one desired.
When the mental person falls in love he will not necessarily follow the line of least resistance and go with the flow, but will again use logic and reasoning to determine if this would be a good mate for an entire lifetime. If reasoning says no then he will withdraw and look elsewhere.

The Course in Miracles makes the interesting statement that love has no opposite and that hate is not its opposite. It makes the point that hate is temporary and based on illusion whereas love is real and eternal.
This may be true when we consider the highest aspect of love, but not love as it is understood by general humanity.
Both love and hate, as it is understood by the masses, are lower manifestations of everlasting love. Lower love is in harmony with the higher octave and hate is out of sync with it. This corresponds to playing Middle C on a well tuned piano and then playing it on one that is out of tune. It is the same note, but one is out of harmony.
This is why love and hate are so interconnected. We hate those most who we were first attracted to by passionate love.
As the world understands love, hate is indeed its opposite. Why? Because love is a magnetic force that pulls two people together and hate is an opposing force that separates them. The effect of the two fit very nicely into the definition of "opposite."
No love would not be the opposite of love because the opposite of love must repel. No love would exist between hate and love and would neither attract nor repel.
I would like to comment on one popular teaching that I see creates illusion and much confusion and it is this; that two opposites are really the same thing.

Higher love which does not originate in the emotional body is eternal as Paul says: "charity endureth forever." Charity, of course, is a little bit of a mistranslation. The original Greek is love, love endures forever.
He was talking about the unselfish love that Christ brought, not the lower love. If lower love endured forever then we would have no divorce.
To say that love is love, or all love is the same, indicates to me that you have only felt one of the octaves of love. When you experience the higher spiritual love and contrast it to the lower you will never again say that love is love or all the same.

So why is loving our neighbor like loving God? Because God is in our neighbor as well as ourselves.
Every commandment and every inspired saying of the biblical prophets is based on the higher law of love.
Following a commandment or teaching mechanically with a black and white mindset kills the love behind the words. Instead, the seeker will suffer restriction, meanness of spirit, suppression and lack (or complete absence) of love.
The real key to following the principle behind the commandments is to look to the God of love within the heart and use the best possible judgment to follow the direction that it leads.
It is interesting that the greater the sin against the law of love the greater is the temptation to lie.
