Global Warming Enlightenment -- Part Two
Global Warming Quotes -- Page One
Synopsis: The following section is devoted to a collection of quotes used by JJ Dewey together with the articles found in Part One of this feature as tools to demonstrate and guide his students towards the light, truth, and a Middle Way path as it relates to issue of global warming. He entitled these quotes as "Global Warming Enlightenment" and inserted them at the end of his day-to-day posts he made at The Keys Of Knowledge spiritual discussion group. The title JJ created for these quotes was also the inspiration for the titling of this entire feature.
1 Scientists Agree the Earth is Warming: While ground-level temperature measurements suggest the earth has warmed between 0.3 and 0.6 degrees Celsius since 1850, global satellite data, the most reliable of all climate measurements, shows no evidence of warming during the past 18 years. Even if earth's temperature has increased slightly, the increase is well within the natural range of known temperature variation over the last several thousand years. Indeed, the earth experienced greater warming between the 10th and 15th centuries -- a time when vineyards thrived in England and Vikings colonized Greenland and built settlements in Canada.

2 Sea levels are rising around the globe, though not uniformly. In fact, sea levels have risen more than 300 feet over the last 18,000 years - far predating any possible human impact. Rising sea levels are natural in between ice ages. Contrary to the predictions of global warming theorists, the current rate of increase is slower than the average rate over the 18,000-year period.

3 A Gallup poll found that only 17 percent of the members of the Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Society think that the warming of the 20th century has been a result of greenhouse gas emissions - principally CO2 from burning fossil fuels.

4 It is a myth that Carbon Dioxide levels in our atmosphere at the moment are at an unprecedented high period.

5 MYTH: Mankind is pumping out carbon dioxide at a prodigious rate. FACT: 96.5 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions are from natural sources, mankind is responsible for only 3.5 percent, with 0.6 percent coming from fuel to move vehicles, and about 1 percent from fuel to heat buildings. Yet vehicle fuel (petrol) is taxed at 300 percent while fuel to heat buildings is taxed at 5 percent even though buildings emit nearly twice as much carbon dioxide!

6 Before a cooling period that began around 1450 the Vikings were growing crops and raising livestock in southwestern Greenland during a warm period that would have alarmed the environmentalists today.

7 MYTH: There are only a tiny handful of maverick scientists who dispute that man-made global warming theory is true. FACT: There are nearly 18,000 signatures from scientists worldwide on a petition called The Oregon Petition which says that there is no evidence for man-made global warming theory nor for any impact from mankind's activities on climate.

8 "Next they'll bring out a chart showing a football field. And they'll say, Imagine the composition of the Earth's atmosphere as a football field. Most of the atmosphere is nitrogen. So, starting from the goal line, nitrogen takes you all the way to the seventy-eight yard line. And most of what's left is oxygen. Oxygen takes you to the ninety-nine yard line. Only one yard to go. But most of what remains is the inert gas argon. Argon brings you within three and a half inches of the goal line. That's pretty much the thickness of the chalk stripe, folks. And how much of that remaining three inches is carbon dioxide? One inch. That's how much CO2 we have in our atmosphere. One inch in a hundred yard football field." She paused dramatically, then continued, "Now, ladies and gentlemen of the jury," she said, "you are told that carbon dioxide has increased in the last fifty years. Do you know how much it has increased, on our football field? It has increased by three-eighths of an inch--less than the thickness of a pencil."

9 MYTH: Scientists on the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issue reports that say 'global warming' is real and that we must do something now. FACT: Scientists draft reports for the IPCC, but the IPCC are bureaucrats appointed by governments. In fact many scientists who contribute to the reports disagree with the 'spin' that the IPCC and media put on their findings. The latest report suggests that the next 100 years might see a temperature change of 6 degrees Celsius yet a Lead Author for the IPCC (Dr John Christy UAH/NASA) has pointed out that the scenarios with the fastest warming rates were added to the report at a late stage, at the request of a few governments - in other words the scientists were told what to do by politicians.

10 Arctic sea level has been falling more than 2 millimeters a year--a movement that [supposedly] sets the region against the global trend of rising waters. A Dutch-UK team made the discovery after analyzing radar altimetry data gathered by Europe's ERS-2 satellite.

11 Recent data have shown there is global warming on Mars. Perhaps those sneaky little Martians have been driving too many SUV's.

12 Much of the warming in the 20th century happened from 1900 to 1940. That warming was followed by atmospheric cooling from 1940 to around 1975. During that period, frost damaged crops in the Midwest during summer months, and glaciers in Europe advanced. This happened despite the rise in greenhouse gases. These facts, too, are not in dispute.

13 Only three percent of the CO2 in the air results from human activity.

14 The other big story about the arctic was the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, released last fall. The report's account of retreating ice and ecosystem disruption seemingly offered confirmation of global warming in action. Critics noted numerous flaws in the report, however, most glaringly was the choice of time scale for the study. By using 1970 as the baseline year-a known cold period-rather than, say, 1950 or 1930, the report showed a warming trend. Other temperature records suggest the arctic today, though warmer than in 1970, is colder than it was in 1930 and still within the range of observed natural temperature variability.

15 The oceans are heating up, and the atmosphere is not. The result is polar ice caps melting and increased rainfall. This points to a hot spot in the earth's core heating the oceans, not human activity.

16 The oceans regulate CO2 in the atmosphere to the minutest detail, as indicated by an El Nino in the Pacific Ocean, which causes CO2 measurements in the air to increase, and then they renormalize when the El Nino disappears.

17 Contrary to popular belief, greenhouse gas emissions in the United States have been reduced 0.5 percent since Bush became president.

18 The 1975, April 28th edition of Newsweek ran a story on the dangers of Global cooling. They warned: There are ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production- with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now. The regions destined to feel its impact are the great wheat-producing lands of Canada and the U.S.S.R. in the North, along with a number of marginally self-sufficient tropical areas - parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indochina and Indonesia - where the growing season is dependent upon the rains brought by the monsoon. Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve. But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.

19 On 60 Minutes Sunday they had a special on the orthodox view of global warming. They were warning us that burning fossil fuels is making the ice melt in the Arctic and Antarctica. I wonder why no one has ever asked the question as to why these two areas are in the most danger when there are no cars or power plants there. And why is it that some of the Arctic waters are up to eight degrees above normal? Obviously there is something happening in the ocean that is causing this - like underwater volcanoes - not grandma driving her car in Ohio.
20 Air has a much lower heat capacity than water, which means oceans can heat the air, but the air cannot significantly heat the oceans. Since the oceans are heating up faster than the air this means that something besides CO2 or man made pollution is causing their temperature to rise.

21 Since the Earth exited the last "major" ice age about 11,500 years ago, our planet has experienced a series of warming and cooling cycles. Despite "global warming," we are approximately 2-3 degrees cooler than about 6,000 years ago.
22 My recent 120-year global climate study, finished in 2001, showed that significant warming since 1940 has occurred only in the concrete, steel and asphalt "heat island cities" around the world. The rural areas of the planet have actually "cooled off a bit" in the past 60 years when compared with the previous 6 decades from 1880 to 1940. The Winter of 2003-04 across much of the North American Continent, Europe, Russia and Asia, featured this colder trend. In fact, many regions had some of the most frigid weather in almost 200 years. Grand Forks, North Dakota, for example, observed record lows in January near minus 50 degrees. A couple of stations to the north in Canada approached minus 60 degrees, actual air temperatures, not wind-chill factors.

23 A dispute erupted this week in Oregon, where Gov. Ted Kulongoski is considering firing the state's climatologist George Taylor, who has said human activity isn't the chief cause of global climate change. That view is not in line with the state policy of Oregon to reduce "greenhouse gases," which are considered by many researchers to be the chief cause of global warming.

24 We've hear a lot about the polar bears being endangered because of global warming but the opposite is true. Indeed, since the 1970s, while the world was warming, polar bear numbers increased dramatically from around 5,000 to as many as 25,000 today, higher than anytime in the 20th Century.

25 According to Drudge, Al Gore apparently informed a number of U.N. Delegates that cigarette smoke can contribute to global warming. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore warned hundreds of U.N. diplomats and staff on Thursday evening (Sept 28, 2006) about the perils of climate change, claiming: Cigarette smoking is a "significant contributor to global warming!"

26 This (IPCC 4th Report) is a political document, not a scientific report, and it is a shining example of the corruption of science for political gain, Inhofe said on Friday (Feb 2, 07), "The media has failed to report that the IPCC Summary for Policymakers was not approved by scientists but by U.N. political delegates and bureaucrats," he (Sen. James Inhofe) added, noting that the IPCC will release the actual scientific report until May 2007.

27 Congressional Global Warming Poll--95 percent of Democrats buy it; 84 percent of the GOP don't. You thought there was a political divide concerning the war, taxes, and abortion? Well, a newly released National Journal poll of members of Congress indicated just as strong a diametric view of whether anthropogenic global warming is real or not. Called a "Congressional Insiders Poll," the study asked 10 Senate Democrats, 48 House Democrats, 10 Senate Republicans, and 45 House Republicans: "Do you think it's been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the Earth is warming because of man-made problems?"
The results:
- 95 percent of Democrats said "Yes."
- 2 percent of Democrats said "No."
- 84 percent of Republicans said "No."
- 13 percent of Republicans said "Yes."

28 A recent study suggests that we should have already begun to enter the next glacial period, and the reason the earth has not begun to cool is because of human activities. The present high CO2 levels will probably guarantee that the earth will never again enter into another ice age, despite the influence of orbital variations that initiate glacial periods. If another glacial period were to begin, the effects would be catastrophic for much of the world's population (probably much more so than global warming).

29 Typical thinking of many in the media: "I would like to say we're at a point where global warming is impossible to deny. Let's just say that global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers, though one denies the past and the other denies the present and future."
Ellen Goodman February 9, 2007
Note: Actually, there are few global warming deniers, but those who question that man is causing most of it are lumped in this category.

30 I gave a talk recently (on fallacies of global warming) and three members of the Canadian government, the environmental cabinet, came up afterwards and said, 'We agree with you, but it's not worth our jobs to say anything.' So what's being created is a huge industry with billions of dollars of government money and people's jobs dependent on it.
Dr. Tim Ball, Coast-to-Coast, Feb 6, 2007
31 A recent paper by John Lyman, of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, reports that the oceans have cooled sharply in the past two years. The computers didn't predict this. Sea level is scarcely rising faster today than a century ago: an inch every 15 years. Hansen now says that the oceanic "flywheel effect" gives us extra time to act, so Stern's alarmism is misplaced.
