A little known fact is that Joseph [Smith] wrote him a letter inviting him back into the church, but he did not respond. Then he came back in shortly after his death hoping to get some recognition as the "Second Elder" so I don't see his motive as 100% pure.
He did have a lot more class than most who were kicked out. Joseph was in a life and death situation when Oliver was excommunicated by local authorities so he could not stand up for him.
