The wilderness is a symbol of that place ahead of its time where creative thoughts go and abide until the rest of humanity becomes ready for discovery. When they are ready the wilderness is then discovered, settled, irrigated and blossoms as the rose.

This also applies here for John had to travel ahead of his time in the spirit to see the true nature of the harlot. It could not be seen through the eyes of the present.

The term came up earlier in connection with the woman who was with child who fled into the wilderness (12:6, 12:14) The first woman was given the wings of the eagle so that she could fly away. In the second instance, John was carried away in the spirit to the wilderness where he saw a woman who was already there.

Now, I have a second question. We lost track of the first woman after the dragon was wroth with the remnant of the woman's seed which keep the commandments of God. Is this the same woman, who was once pure, but became a whore? Or maybe the whore was one of the offspring of the first woman. Whatever the answer is, I sense that there is an interesting mystery to be uncovered here.

They are two aspects of the female energy. The woman from chapter 12 represents the divine female. The woman in chapter 17 represents the misuse and corruption of the female energy.
