Newbees

I don't know what's getting in the water lately. Susan makes an innocent comment on a movie and all kinds of dark accusations surface and now Ruth makes an innocent suggestion as to how to improve things on the list and again she becomes the brunt of another attack.

These attacks over harmless suggestions tend to set people off, offend others and distract the group from talking about anything meaningful.

If this continues we will have to increase the number of people who are on moderated status.

My advice to those who are overly concerned about the righteousness of others: chill out. Remember that you are among friends and be a friend to all.

Overall I see Ruth as a harmless soul who means to do good and follows the highest she knows. I know that if anyone desires to correct her that kindness will go a long way.

Let me set the example.

Ruth's idea for a personal research assistant identifies a real need. The real question is the best way to meet it. She presented one possibility.

The main problem with one person so designated is that it may be more work than the person could effectively handle. Then too, someone may think they can do the job and it may prove more than he can handle.

When new people post they are often assisted by active people on the list. John C is an example of one who diligently seeks to help in this area and there are others.

On the other hand, some who do not post do not get much assistance because members do not know about them.

Here is the solution the way I see it.

Those who are active on the list should keep an eye out for new people who may appreciate some help and post information that may be helpful in response to their posts. Private e-mails could also be sent when useful.

In addition we could have something like an "Adopt-A-Newbee" program where a seasoned member could adopt a new member (if he is open to it) and help him gain knowledge and adjust. Many would also appreciate just having someone who cares to assist them. If we did this certain members could be given names of new members who do not yet post so they could check with them.

If they appear to not want any assistance we would leave them alone. If they appear to appreciate the service, they could be adopted.

Toss this idea around. If there is enough interest we may do something.
